South Korea has joined efforts to expedite the oil spill cleanup in Mindoro, its embassy in Manila said Thursday, March 23.
“The Korean Government’s support for the Philippines continues as the Korean Coast Guard (KCG) was sent to closely work with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in assisting cleanup efforts in Mindoro’s oil spill-affected waters,” the embassy said in a statement.
The South Korean government also said it would provide 20 tons of sorbet pads and snares, 1,000 meters of solid flotation curtain boom, and 2,000 sets of personal protective equipment.

“This is the first time Korea has provided assistance for the prevention of marine pollution, and Korea highly values the importance of restoring areas affected by environmental disasters and accidents,” the embassy said.
Motor tanker Princess Empress sank in the waters off Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, on February 28 while carrying 900,000 liters of industrial fuel due to strong waves.
It then caused an oil spill that has spread to other areas, including Verde Island, located along Verde Island Passage, which is known for its rich marine biodiversity.
The Philippines’ oil spill response effort has also received assistance from Japan and the United States.
