Skateboarding star Margielyn Didal engaged to longtime girlfriend

by Joyce Remo

FOR skateboarding olympian Margielyn Didal, her longtime partner only had two choices when she popped the question — yes or yes?

After eight years, the 2018 Asian Games gold medalist and Tokyo Olympics contender took her relationship with now-fiancée Jozel Manzanares to the next level after a romantic proposal on Tuesday, February 21.

The couple was celebrating their anniversary when the supposed intimate dinner at Soul Sierra in Cebu unfolded into an enchanting night. Surrounded by red petals and glistening lights, Didal knelt down to ask for Manzanares’ hand.

Who is Margielyn?

The 23-year-old Cebu-born athlete started her skateboarding journey during her teenage years at the Concave Park in Cebu. When the park closed its door to the public, Didal began joining local competitions until she eventually ventured into the international scene.

In 2018, she became the first Filipino to compete in Street League Skateboarding upon joining the  SLS PRO Open in London, England in May 2018. She finished eighth in the competition.

Didal became more well-known when she joined the X Games Minneapolis in 2018 and won a gold medal in the Asian Games during the same year.

She then gained immense popularity from her astounding performance, magnetic smile, and goofy personality during the Tokyo Olympics in July 2021.

Although the professional street skateboarder has fallen short of the historic gold medal for the Philippines, she nonetheless won the hearts of many Olympic fans all over the world for her passion and sportsmanship.

Didal is currently on a competition hiatus to recover from the ankle injury she acquired during the Red Bull Skate competition in Brazil in October 2022.
