Rainy first day of the year of the water rabbit

by Leila Salaverria

THE first day of the year of the water rabbit will be a wet one in large parts of the country.

Large parts of Mindanao and parts of the Visayas will have rainy weather due to the trough or extension of the low pressure area that is close to, but still outside, the Philippine area of responsibility.

There is a possibility that the low pressure area could enter the country in the coming days, according to the state weather bureau.

On the other hand, the shear line, the boundary where hot and cold air meet, will continue to bring rains in the Southern part of Luzon and parts of the Visayas.

The northeast monsoon will bring rains in northern Luzon.

Luzon weather

There will be cloudy skies with scatted rain showers and thunderstorms in Bicol, Quezon, Marinduque, and Romblon due to the shear line.

Those in Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Aurora could blame the rains today on the northeast monsoon.

Residents in all of these areas are advised to watch out for possible flash floods and landslides due to moderate to at times heavy rains.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light rains. There will also be isolated rain showers and thunderstorms in Palawan due to localized thunderstorms

Visayas and Mindanao weather

Eastern Visayas, the Caraga region, Davao region, and Northern Mindanao will feel the effects of the trough of the low pressure area.

Flash floods and landslides are possible due to moderate to at times heavy rains, especially in areas highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards, or areas which recently experienced a significant amount of rainfall.

The rest of Visayas and Mindanao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms.

The rains could be moderate to heavy and may cause flash floods and landslides.

Monday weather in select cities

Metro Manila will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light rains due to the northeast monsoon.
