by Jericho Zafra

MINDANAOAN youth boxer Ronel Suyom snatched the silver medal at the World Youth Championships, which concluded Friday evening (Manila time) in La Nucia, Spain.

Following a streak of impressive victories, the 17-year-old boxer from Bukidnon advanced to the finals of the minimum weight division.

However, he was unable to secure the championship after losing the bout to Suresh Vishvanath of India by a split decision score of 4-1.

There were 500 youth boxers from 73 countries all around the world that participated in the competition, which spanned from November 14 to November 26.

In a Twitter post on Saturday, Philippine Sports Commission congratulated the youth boxer for his podium finish boasting the hashtag “#GalingNgAtletangPinoy.”

Prior to Suyom’s silver medal podium finish, Carlo Paalam earned the Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan, after vanquishing Makhmud Sabyrkhan of Kazakhstan in the finals last November 12.

In addition to Paalam, Nesthy Petecio and Hergie Bacyadan each won a bronze medal in Jordan. Petecio competed in the women’s featherweight division, and Bacyadan competed in the women’s middleweight division.
