THE Philippine Embassy in Ankara has confirmed that one Filipina and her three children died in the tragic 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Southern Turkey on February 6.

“It is with deepest regret that the Embassy must confirm the passing of a Filipina housewife and her three children, previously reported to be missing under the rubble in Antakya,” the Philippine Embassy in Turkey wrote.
It also disclosed that the remains of the four earthquake casualties have been laid to rest by the Filipina’s Turkish husband in accordance with the country’s tradition.
The embassy said that it is currently hosting over 20 families in its shelter. There are also more than 70 individuals, composed of overseas Filipinos, children, Turkish spouses and senior citizens, who were welcomed by the embassy.
It said at least 70 Filipinos have decided to remain in the province.

Help given
While most of them had already received assistance from the authorities, the embassy said there were a handful of Filipinos who fully declined the help so that it could be given to those who are in more distressing situations.
“Most were given assistance, according to their needs, while a handful respectfully declined so that it may be reserved for those in more dire situations,” it said.
It also said it is fast-tracking efforts to repatriate all qualified Filipino citizens who wish to return to the Philippines.
It may likewise provide assistance in referring affected FIlipinos to housing and financial programs and other services provided by the Turkish government for its displaced citizens, it said.
More than 46,000 people were killed during the massive earthquake, including three Filipinas. The Turkish government is expecting the death toll to rise as authorities continue to dig for bodies.
