Pagasa: Heavy rains in Luzon, flood alert in Aurora

by Malou Talosig-Bartolome

LUZON and Davao region residents don’t forget your umbrellas today. Aurora residents, evacuate if you are near the river systems.

State weather forecasting agency Pagasa said based on their 12-hour rainfall forecast, Luzon will experience light to moderate rains and thunderstorms.

There is no typhoon but three weather systems are affecting the country today. Pagasa said the Northeast Monsoon or hanging amihan, Shear Line and Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) are bringing in the rains in Luzon and parts of Mindanao today.

The Northeast Monsoon is affecting Northern Luzon while the Shear Line is affecting the eastern sections of Central and Southern Luzon.

Meanwhile, Pagasa satellite images has spotted ITCZ hovering Mindanao.

Flood advisories

Due to the forecasted 12-hour rains, Pagasa raised the flood warning in Aurora to red.

Red means flooding is already occurring and that the water level in the area would be “above critical level.” The red flooding alert was issued for residents living near the rivers and the tributaries in Aurora particularly Casiguran, Aguang and Lower Umiray.

“People living near the mountain slopes and in the low lying areas of the above-mentioned river systems and the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils concerned are still advised to take necessary precautionary measures,” the 5am Pagasa flood advisory reads.

A yellow advisory is also up in Isabela, Cagayan, Quirino, and Quezon. Yellow means flooding is “possible” due to light to moderate rains. The effect would be a “low rise in water level but still below alarm level.”

Meanwhile, a general flood advisory was issued in Dinagat Islands, Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Norte.
