November 14 weather: Thunderstorms in parts of Northern Luzon, Mindanao felt

by Malou Talosig-Bartolome

An umbrella and a light jacket can come in handy today in Metro Manila and the rest of the country.

State weather forecaster Pagasa said most of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

Half an hour past midnight til around past today, Cagayan, Isabela and some parts in Apayao and Kalinga have already experienced moderate to heavy rain showers and thunderstorms.

Twenty minutes before 8am, some parts in Zamboanga del Norte,  Misamis Occidental, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and Davao Occidental also experienced localized thunderstorms.

What’s causing the localized thunderstorms?

ITCZ or the inter-tropical convergence zone – the band of clouds that circles the globe near the equator – trade winds of the Northern and Southern hemispheres converge. When the sun heats the ocean, it raises the temperature and humidity of the air in the ITCZ. As trade winds converge and the buoyant air rises, the air expands, cools and later accumulates moisture in a series of thunderstorms.

What’s the impact of ITCZ?

Pagasa warned residents in areas affected by thunderstorms to take “precautionary measures” against impacts such as flash floods and landslides.

Pagasa issued a series of thunderstorm advisories in the following areas today:
