‘Stranger Things’ star Noah Schnapp comes out as gay

by Joyce Remo

AMERICAN actor Noah Schnapp used a viral TikTok sound to reveal his sexual identity.

In a TikTok video posted on January 6, the 18-year-old Stranger Things cast member came out as gay and shared how his family and friends reacted to the news.

“When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was ‘We know,’” Schnapp wrote in the video while lip-syncing to the words: “You know what it never was? That serious. It was never that serious. Quite frankly, it will never be that serious.”

In the caption, he wrote, “I guess I’m more similar to will than I thought,” pertaining to his Stranger Things character, Will Byers.

The TikTok video received congratulatory messages directed at Schnapp, lauding him for his courage to come out and reveal his sexuality to the general public.

Will Byers’ sexuality

In May 2022, Schnapp declined to disclose Will Byers’ sexuality, saying it was up to the audience’s interpretation.

“I find that people do reach to put a label on him and just want to know, so badly… He’s just confused and growing up. And that’s what it is to be a kid,” said Schnapp in an interview with entertainment publication Variety.

But two months later, he revealed in an interview that Will “had been wrestling with being gay.”

“Now it’s 100% clear that he is gay and he does love Mike. But before, it was a slow arc. I think it is done so beautifully, because it’s so easy to make a character just like all of a sudden be gay,” he said.

The 18-year-old actor has been praised for his acting in the  Netflix science fiction horror series Stranger Things, where he plays one of the show’s main characters. His character is a “closeted gay” who is secretly in love with this best friend.

He is also known for his roles in the films Bridge of Spies (2015), Abe (2019), and Hubie Halloween (2020), and as the voice of Charlie Brown in the animated The Peanuts Movie (2015).
