French MP Calls for US Statue of Liberty’s Return to France

A FRENCH member of the European Parliament has urged the US to return the Statue of Liberty, arguing that it no longer reflects the values that inspired France to give it to America. 

“We’re going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom: ‘Give us back the Statue of Liberty,’” said French MEP Raphaël Glucksmann at a Place Publique convention, as reported by Le Monde.

“We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So, it will be just fine here at home,” he added. 

Glucksmann, a vocal advocate for Ukraine, has been a strong critic of former U.S. President Donald Trump, condemning his drastic policy shifts on the war and their broader implications.

He also criticized Trump’s funding cuts to U.S. research institutions, which have already led the French government to launch an initiative to recruit affected researchers.

“The second thing we’re going to say to the Americans is: ‘if you want to fire your best researchers, if you want to fire all the people who, through their freedom and their sense of innovation, their taste for doubt and research, have made your country the world’s leading power, then we’re going to welcome them’,” said Glucksmann. 

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States of America to commemorate the centennial of American independence and shared the two countries’ ideals of liberty and democracy. 

Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and built with the engineering expertise of Gustave Eiffel, the statue was funded by both the French and American people through public donations.
