JUST WHEN you thought you’d seen every crazy thing that could happen in WWE, an unexpected event occurred when John Cena finally turned heel, shocking the whole wrestling industry.
Cena’s career has been built on loyalty, hustle, and respect, yet after two decades, he took a drastic turn. Just like they say, you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
Now that it’s here, it’s reasonable to claim that certain unthinkables have always been close at hand. This turn of events is kind of a “emergency button” that WWE has refrained from touching, until now.
Throughout his career, there has been no indication that this stunner was coming. We recently witnessed Cena lift Jey Uso’s hand after the Royal Rumble and hug CM Punk after the Elimination Chamber bout.
A shocking twist, as we all assumed he’d be a hero forever. As much as we hate to watch the 16-time world champion become the villain we always hated as kids, ending a career with a boom like this isn’t a bad thing.
Some of us may still be puzzled why the rapid change. To say the obvious, it was a “now or never” move for John Cena and WWE, as he is about to end his well-decorated wrestling career.
The segment, which included The Rock and Cody Rhodes, served as a show-ender, indicating that something huge was in the works, but witnessing Cena deliver a low blow to the Universal Champion was unexpected.
If anyone can speak to how successful Cena’s career has been, it would be Triple H. The Game even believes that The Champ’s heel turn was one of the most significant moments in his career and the business itself.
“I’ve been fortunate to be around a lot of the biggest things in this business in the last, say, 30 years, I don’t know if I’ve ever felt a more powerful moment, of the entirety of John Cena’s career,” Triple H said.
“Being the one guy that you never really saw, at least in the beginning of his career, or as you moved forward, when he really became John Cena, and the champion, you just didn’t see this moment coming.”
“And in a moment of, when you get to a place in your career where you know, undoubtedly, you have months left on your career, it puts you in a different perspective and it puts you in a place like, it is now or never,” he added.
Knowing how long Triple H has been with WWE, he believes Cena is the embodiment of someone who refuses to settle for less. Despite the doubts surrounding this decision, he believes The Champ will give it his all.
“Somebody like him can double down and say, screw it, I want to be challenged right to the last moment. I want to go out on my shield. I want to give this everything I have. I want to challenge myself. I want to do something different,” he described Cena.
“I want to go out there and do it all. And that’s the beauty of John Cena. John has always been the guy to do what is best here, but he’s always been the guy to gamble on himself, and he did that tonight, and it was incredible to watch.”
“That is just an epic moment. I feel like this is one of those nights that 20 years from now, people will be saying, that night in Toronto. It was incredible. I don’t know that you realize it in the moment but that’s the way I feel about tonight,” he added.
As for whether the heel change lives up to the expectations, the WWE community is still waiting for answers. Can Cena even play the heel role? Is he going to stay in dark mode for the entire retirement tour?
Given the unusual situation in which the industry finds itself, it appears unjust to deny supporters the opportunity to applaud “The Champ” for one more time, yet returning too quickly will also feel inauthentic.
There’s also the possibility that Cena will be overshadowed by The Rock, who has now secured his reputation as WWE’s ultimate “big bad wolf.” Having that in mind, nobody knows how this will end.
Nonetheless, Heel Cena has arrived, and the build-up to WrestleMania 41 could not have gone better. The golden era of professional wrestling continues, with Cena returning to the top in the best way possible.
