MMDA Opens Rainbow Crosswalk and Footbridge

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), showing a vibrant symbol of support and allyship with the LGBTQIA+ community, transformed a pedestrian lane and a footbridge into rainbow crosswalk and overpass in front of its head office in Barangay Ugong, Pasig City.

According to MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes, the rainbow-painted crosswalk and footbridge is a visible commitment that helps foster a sense of belonging and safety for the LGBTQIA+ individuals, encouraging them to fully and openly participate in public.

“In MMDA, there is no discrimination. All are welcome and given equal employment opportunities regardless of sexual preference,” Artes said.

“The adoption of rainbow crosswalk and footbridge is just a symbolic start towards more concrete plans and projects for gender inclusivity,” he added.

The Chairman emphasized that LGBTQIA+ individuals should be welcomed to society to eradicate the stigma and fight discrimination and inequality.

“The government’s support for the LGBTs is an expression that there’s nothing wrong with being a member of the community,” he said.

Additionally, the Chairman expresses high hopes that the MMDA can set a powerful example for other government agencies, local government units, and private organizations to take a stand and be socially aware.

Pasig City Representative Roman Romulo, for his part, said that the unveiling of rainbow pedestrian crossing and footbridge near the MMDA office shows that the city is for inclusivity.

The ceremonial ribbon cutting on Monday was also attended by Barangay Ugong captain Gloria P. Cruz, Valle Verde 3 Homeowners Association President Alma Horn, and MMDA officials.
