MMC to coordinate with MMDA over dangling wires

METRO Manila Council President San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora said that they will coordinate and help the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on having a regulation so as to address the problem of dangling wires in the National Capital Region (NCR).

“I will coordinate with MMDA Chairman Don Artes so that we can discuss during our next Metro Manila Council meeting possible regulations that can be approved to address this issue of dangling wires in NCR,” Zamora said.

Likewise, Zamora called on “all stakeholders to support this vital measure.”

A measure seeking to clear streets of overhead cables that are dangling and unused has been filed at the House of Representatives.

Bulacan 6th District Rep. Salvador Pleyto filed House Bill 10427, that is seeking to mandate telecommunications, cable and internet providers to mend dangling wires and remove non-operational overhead wires and cables. 

“The presence of non-operational overhead cable TV and telephone wires hanging precariously from poles, trees and high-rise structures has become a significant nuisance, not only because of its unsightly appearance, but primarily because of the conceivable accident it may cause,” Pleyto said in his explanatory note.

Under the measure, public utility providers will have to bundle up sagging and dangling aerial utility wires, remove all non-operational or unused wires and cables, and relocate or replace posts to adhere with the specified allowable clearance for aerial wires and cables.

The bill authorizes local governments to withhold or cancel the permits of providers that will fail to comply.

“I fully support House Bill No. 10427, the “Anti-Dangling Wires Act of 2024,” introduced by Bulacan Rep. Salvador Pleyto Sr.  This important measure addresses the long-standing issue of ‘spaghetti wires’ that pose significant safety risks and spoil the beauty of our cities,” Zamora said.

He added that the city has been a leader in tackling this issue. 

“Since 2020, we have worked proactively to address dangling wires through our “Anti-Dangling Wire Task Force Ordinance.”  In 2021, we partnered with public utility companies to regulate and monitor the installation of wires, enhancing safety and improving our city’s landscape,” he said.

“Our proactive approach has reduced accidents and minimized service disruptions during typhoons,” he added.
