PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. led the inauguration of the next phase of the Pasig Bigyang Buhay Muli (PBBM) project on Sunday, June 23, as part of his administration’s efforts to bring back the Pasig River’s old glory.
Marcos was joined by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, House Speaker Martin Romualdez, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna, Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos, and Housing Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar during the launching of Phase 1C of the Pasig River Urban Development Project (PRUDP) showcase area at the Plaza Mexico, Magallanes Drive in Intramuros, Manila.
The esplanade’s newest stretch links the Jones Bridge to Plaza Mexico and Fort Santiago in the historic walled city.
It will feature leasable commercial spaces that will house at least 32 businesses, according to the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD).
Above the structure is a roof deck, which will have a viewing area and connect to the pedestrian walkway and bike lane to promote transport connectivity.
“Bringing the Pasig River back to life mirrors our ongoing journey towards a brighter future for our country. How well we do here will reflect our efforts in other areas of the country and how successful we are at improving and leaving the country a better place than we found it,” said Marcos in his speech.
He hoped to complete the PBBM project in three years.
Marcos also called on Filipinos to sustain the Pasig River’s cleanliness, beauty, and security.
“Let us rally behind this advocacy and contribute, in our own way, to save the Pasig River. Supporting and participating in the efforts of the government and its partners to help maintain its cleanliness, and that will go a long way,” he stressed.
It rained during the inauguration of Phase 1C, but it capped off with a fireworks display.
The event followed the launching of Phases 1A and 1B in January 2024, which featured a 500-meter showcase area behind the post office.
Through Executive Order No. 35 signed in 2023, Marcos created the Inter-Agency Council for the Pasig River Urban Development to facilitate the full rehabilitation of the banks along the Pasig River water system and nearby water systems to provide “alternative transportation, propel economic opportunities, and boost tourism activities.”
