Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are pictured right after their release in Cali, Colombia, on June 21, 2024. For almost a decade, the World Mosquito Program (WMP) has been replacing the local population of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes with "biologically modified" insects of the same species to prevent the transmission of dengue fever, that has already caused thousands of deaths only this year in Latin America. THE Department of Health said that aside from Quezon City, eight more areas in the country are set to announce a dengue outbreak in their area due to the rise in cases over the recent weeks.
According to DOH spokesperson Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo, only the Local Government Units can make the announcement, saying that the areas will be in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and Calabarzon.
“Sa loob ng tatlong rehiyon na ‘yun, may siyam na local government units, isa do’n si Quezon City,” Domingo said in a radio interview.
Over the weekend, Quezon City declared a dengue outbreak as the cases rose rapidly.
At least 10 deaths due to the virus this year, eight of them were minors.
According to the QC City Epidemiology and Surveillance Division, from January 1 to February 14, 2025, there were a total of 1,769 cases in the city—nearly 200% higher than last year.
The DOh said that nationwide there was an upward trend in dengue cases this year with 28,234 cases as of February 1.
It translated to a 40% increase from the same period last year.
