DepEd leaves cancellation of classes due to transport strike to LGUs

CLASSES in schools will push through on Monday, November 20, unless canceled by the local government units due to the transport strike, the Department of Education (DepEd) said.

”No cancellation of classes will be issued by the Department of Education (DepEd),” it said in a statement on Saturday.

”Unless local government units announce cancellation and/or suspension of classes in their respective jurisdictions, schools shall hold classes without disruption.”

Transport group Piston has prepared a three-day strike starting November 20 to protest the December 31 deadline for franchise consolidation applications under the public utility vehicle modernization program.

The PUV modernization program has been seen by some transport groups as a threat to the existence of traditional jeepneys.

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board Chairperson Teofilo Guadiz III warned drivers and operators that participating in the transport strike may result in the suspension or revocation of their franchise.

“Huwag po sana nilang ituloy ang kanilang balak na strike dahil po unang una, ito ay salungat sa usapan nila sa gobyerno na ang prangkisa ay isang pribilehiyo,” he said.
