Authorities prepare security measures for FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023

The Philippines has prepared security measures to ensure a safe and successful hosting of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, which begins on Friday.

The security plans cover various areas, such as crowd management, emergency response, traffic control, and public health measures, aligning with global best practices to guarantee a secure environment for all attendees, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday.

The security personnel deployment plan involves 2,589 officers from the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), 363 officers from Police Regional Office 3 (PRO 3), and 2,904 personnel from other government agencies and force multipliers.

On Wednesday, an inter-agency conference presided over by Police Lieutenant General Michael John Dubria, acting PNP deputy chief for operations, was held, with representatives from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the Department of Health (DOH), the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), as well as a representative from the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 in attendance.

“Our collective efforts ensure that FBWC 2023 not only showcases world-class basketball but also sets an example for seamless coordination in providing a secure environment for global events,” Dubria said.

More than 3,000 participants are expected, with 2,000 of them coming from abroad, including FIBA members, World Congress attendees, local organizers, government officials, media, and foreign embassy representatives.

Delegation arrivals on August 22–23 totaled 2,017, comprising 793 participants and 1,224 FIBA officials and staff, the PNP said.

“These numbers underscore the magnitude of the event and the collective efforts required to ensure its smooth operation,” it said.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 will run from August 25 to September 10 in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan.

The venues are the Philippine Arena, Smart Araneta Coliseum, and Mall of Asia Arena, which will host the final stages of the tournament, including the gold medal match.
