Liza Soberano: Love team only ticket to stardom for Filipino actors

by Christina Indon

Filipino-American actress Liza Soberano recently guested on a podcast show called DIVE Studios. She became a guest on DIVE Studio’s GET REAL show, where the guests openly share the ups and downs of work, love, and adulthood.

The Season 3 podcast is hosted by K-Pop idols JUNNY, Peniel of BTOB, and Ashely Choi.

In this episode, Peniel and Ashley Choi are the only hosts. During the episode, Soberano shared her experiences when she became an actress in the Philippines, from her decision to pursue acting in Hollywood to some personal tips on spending money and managing stress.

Soberano shared that she was happy that she gained recognition during her career in the Philippines. But she felt pressured to keep a “squeaky clean” image, which led her to become a controversial topic on social media.

Soberano then explains that the Philippines has a huge phenomenon called “love teams,” where a management puts two actors together and they have to be romantically involved on-screen or off-screen. Love teams are only supposed to work with each other throughout their careers unless the agency says otherwise.

Liza explains, “If you look at my previous movies and TV shows, I’m mainly with just one co-actor. In love teams, you’re expected to just be with that one person throughout your career and in your personal life.”

“People don’t want to see you aside any other male actor or any other male in general,” Soberano adds.

Peniel then asks Soberano if actors are allowed to choose the person they want to work with and Soberano answers that the management will decide for them through a chemistry test or a project together as supporting actors. The management will also rely on the audience’s reactions whether the two actors blend together or not.

Soberano explains that if the chemistry is strong, the management will now see to it that the love team is given more projects in the future.

Ashley Choi then asks, “What if that love team doesn’t date in real life?” Soberano answers that some love teams don’t date in real life, and they are not allowed to say that to keep the fans hungry or excited for them. She also explains that in interviews, it’s becoming a habit that hosts ask questions to love teams about whether they are officially dating or not.

Soberano adds that love teams may make fans excited, but the line between reality and acting becomes a blur.

Peniel and Ashely Choi are surprised by the information. Soberano then adds that usually, for an actor to become a big star, he must be paired with another actor.

“In the Philippines, the only way to become a big star really, if you’re not a singer, if you’re an actor is to be in a love team,” said Soberano, who became popular with her onscreen and offscreen romance with actor Enrique Gil.

She adds that separation between the two actors in love teams happens when they are no longer at the height of their careers or when the audience thinks that they are no longer entertained by them.

Soberano explains that not all actors are put in love teams, but says that kind of experience is rare and only happens in the actor’s later career.

Ashley Choi then asks, “What if I’m in a love team with another actor but I’m dating someone else in real life and I get caught with that person?”

Soberano immediately answers, “You can’t. You better not.”

Soberano shared that those kinds of cases have happened where fans cancel the actor’s real-life partner. It can affect both actors’ careers in a negative way.

However, Soberano says that other love teams are in a relationship and are happy.
