It’s a rainy Tuesday, first day of work

by Malou Talosig-Bartolome

IT will be a rainy day today, the first day of work after long holiday weekend. Did you bring your new Christmas-gifted umbrellas?

Why is it rainy?

State weather forecasting agency Pagasa said two weather systems are affecting the country today — Low-Pressure Area (LPA) located 145km from General Santos and the Northeast Monsoon.

The trough or extension of the LPA is affecting Visayas, Mindanao and Palawan. The “hanging amihan” is still affecting Luzon.

What’s the impact?

Areas battered by the Christmas Shearline and Northeast Monsoon will experience moderate to at times heavy rains again so there might be landslides or flashfloods.

  • Visayas provinces, Caraga, Davao Region, Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula and Palawan will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms.
  • Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Bicol and Cagayan Valley regions,  as well as the province of Aurora will also get moderate to at times heavy rains. This time, it’s the Northeast Monsoon bringing in the rains.

Not so heavy rains for other Mindanao areas but…

The rest of Mindanao will have partly cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms. Although the rains brought about by local thunderstorms will not be as heavy, Pagasa still warned of possible flashfloods in areas which have been receiving a lot of rains the past few weeks.

Other parts of Luzon chill with amihan

The rest of Luzon will be generally fair, though sometimes with light rains.

Temperature check

It was kind of hot yesterday for some areas in the country, one may think it is not yet January.

  • At least five areas reported high temperatures between 32-34°C around noontime.
  • Pagasa’s thermometers registered highest temperatures in Zamboanga City, San Jose in Occidental Mindoro, Subic, Catbalogan City and Clark.

On the average, the temperature forecast would be a low of 24.1°C  around 5:15 am, to as high as 31.8°C. It might be humid in the morning, at 94 percent relative humidity around 5:15 am.

  • Sunset 5:39 pm

Fishermen alert

The Northeast Monsoon also tags along strong to gale-force winds and is affecting northern Luzon. Sea conditions could be very rough, with waves as high as four meters or one-story building.

Avoid venturing out to the sea if you are fishing or going on inter-island travel on board small sea crafts to the following areas:

  • Batanes
  • Cagayan
  • Isabela
  • Aurora
  • Northern Quezon
  • Camarines Norte
  • Camarines Sur
  • Catanduanes
  • Albay
  • Sorsogon
  • Northern Samar
  • Ilocos Norte
  • Ilocos Sur
  • La Union
  • Pangasinan
