UP Cinema: 20th Anniversary of Piling Obrang Vidyo (POV)

Piling Obrang Vidyo, the University of the Philippine’s annual film festival, comes back for its 20th year and will run from July 1 to 6 at the University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI), Quezon City for its 2024 edition.

With its theme “Tayo ang Pelikula”, the event aims to highlight the Filipino culture through the films made by Filipino artists and will feature film screenings and an awards ceremony at Cine Adarna.

At its opening event, POV XX festival director Earvic Noay said that they stay committed with their promise of telling the stories highlighting the importance and reflect of the Filipinos while also recognizing the entries of the finalists for this year’s competition.

This year’s finalist for POV includes 14 films by student filmmakers from different institutions of the country, with four from Senior High School Category while the rest is under the collegiate category.

The official judges of the competition are National Artist Kidlat Tahimik, Ruth Villarama,  filmmakers Baby Carl Joseph Papa, scientist-actor Jason Tan Liwag, Jesed Moreno and Maria Estela Paiso.

The film features will be available to stream for free online, from July 6 to 20 on JuanFlix.

Over the Decades

POV is an annual film festival and competition event hosted by UP Cinema, the University of the Philippine Diliman film organization. 

Over the past two decades, this event was able to showcase the creativity and talents of Filipinos through the short films created by different individual filmmakers and students.

Earlier films featured on POV includes, Alingasngas ng mga Kuliglig on 2021 by Vahn Leinard Pascual, Nang Maglublob Ako sa Isang Mangkok ng Liwanag (2021) by Kukay Zinampan, and Ang Pagkalaglag ng Ginintuang Salamin ng Pagkakilanlan (2017) by Tricia Sotaso, with their judges John Arcilla, director Zig Dulay, and cinematographer Tey Clamor.
