Timor-Leste President Acknowledges PH Support on ASEAN Aspirations

TIMORE-LESTE President Jose Ramos-Horta expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Philippines for their pivotal role in assisting his nation’s journey toward becoming a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). 

Ramos-Horta, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, aims for Timor-Leste to secure its place among the ASEAN nations by the year 2025, with The Philippines sponsoring and steering this significant effort.

Known for his unwavering advocacy of human rights, he urged neighboring countries to contribute to Timor-Leste’s development, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in navigating the challenging path towards progress. 

He highlighted the exemplary transition from conflict to peace in Timor-Leste and Indonesia, citing the once tumultuous borders between the two nations as now being “the most peaceful in the world today.”

During a special lecture at the Ateneo de Manila University, President Ramos-Horta shared insights into the transformation of Timor-Leste and Indonesia, praising the successful resolution of their conflicts and the establishment of lasting peace. 

He proudly stated that Timor-Leste has achieved zero ethnic-based violence, emphasizing the national healing that has taken place, addressing the wounds of the past.

President Ramos-Horta, whose visit to Manila aims to strengthen bilateral relations, envisions bringing substantial benefits to Timor-Leste through its potential ASEAN membership. He emphasized a commitment to fostering advancements in technology, education, and economic opportunities that would significantly enhance the well-being of his constituents.

“I believe that joining ASEAN will be a great leap forward in our human capacity, marking over two decades since the restoration of our independence,” President Ramos-Horta stated. 

He expressed optimism about the positive impact that ASEAN membership could have on Timor-Leste’s development, underscoring the importance of a just and peaceful solution to conflicts, the establishment of a solid democratic foundation, and the relentless pursuit of independence.

His visit to Manila symbolizes the strengthened ties between Timor-Leste and the Philippines, reflecting a shared commitment to regional cooperation and development. The Philippines’ sponsorship of Timor-Leste’s ASEAN candidacy marks a significant milestone in the diplomatic relations between the two nations.
