The Gen Z Language: What does this mean?

IN TODAY’S generation, we constantly come across lingo that we don’t seem to comprehend. I mean, no cap, some of these slangs from the younger generation can be difficult to grasp at times.

Generation Z, born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, has evolved its own particular vocabulary shaped by technology, social media, and cultural trends. 

This generation is recognized for its digital savvy and rapid adoption of online terminology. Each generation naturally develops its own vocabulary, which is a continuing element of language evolution. 

I mean, a hard pass? FWIW? Slay? Purr? It’s Giving? These are just a few of the many vocabularies we hear and see from Generation Z when they connect online. However, what do these slangs actually mean? 

Hard Pass

Even as early as the 2020s, we frequently hear this statement from Generation Z. Hard pass is a colloquial term that some people use to indicate “Oh hell no,” as it stands for aggressively rejecting or dismissing an idea.

Taking a hard pass is slang for “absolutely no.” When someone says they’re giving a “hard pass,” they’re forcefully and unequivocally declining an offer, invitation, proposal, or proposition. 

It is a basic manner of expressing a firm refusal to engage or accept something.

FWIW

FWIW means “For What It’s Worth.” It is a common abbreviation used by the younger generation in internet communication and messaging applications.

When someone uses the phrase “FWIW,” they are usually offering facts or an opinion for consideration, but they may indicate that the information is not critical or has a substantial impact. 

It basically means, “Here’s something to think about, even if it’s not particularly important.”

Slay

I’m sure everyone has heard of this word before. In modern slang, particularly among Gen Zs, the term “slay” has taken on a positive and empowering sense. 

When someone says that someone else is “slaying” or that they will “slay,” they are referring to someone who is doing exceedingly well, looking great, or attaining success with flair and confidence.

For example, if someone shares a great photo on social media, their friends may say, “You’re slaying in this pic!” 

It is frequently used to express praise and encouragement, especially in the context of fashion, looks, or personal accomplishments.

Purr!

Another method to express approval in a girly pop fashion, similar to the iconic “Slay” from Generation Z, is to say “purr.”

“Purr” is one of the most popular Gen Z slang phrases on social media, coined by LGBTQIA+ influencer Rolling Ray. The influencer began purring when he was pleased with himself or others.

This suggests that stating “purr” is a way to show approval or contentment with something. You may always utilize “purr” in most favorable situations.

It’s giving!

I mean, the Gen Zs are giving, right? The expression “it’s giving” is also often used by Generation Z. The word “it” refers to someone or something, whereas “giving” implies that someone or something exudes a vibe.

If your friend wonders what their dress gives them and it gives them typical Tita vibes, you may answer, “It’s giving Tita.” With that said, whatever feeling the person or object gives off, you might say “it’s giving (blank vibe).”

However, a person can use “it’s giving” alone to signify “I like it” or “You did well.” To use it negatively, say, “It’s not giving” or “It’s not giving (blank vibe).”

Generation Z’s creativity with words

It is evident that Generation Z is innovative in every way possible. The way they dress and style themselves, as well as the phrases they produce and use on a daily basis, are sufficient indicators of their level of creativity.
