The Conjuring: Last Rites brings the horror full circle as the infamous paranormal investigators take on one final, unholy haunting—the terrifying case of the Smurl family.
With their now-adult daughter Judy drawn into the chaos, Ed and Lorraine Warren face a darkness that hits closer to home than ever before.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Director Michael Chaves said that the final chapter was the “most personal” story for the Warrens out of all the films in the series.
“Even as we were developing it, we were throwing a bunch of ideas out: ‘How shamelessly big can we make it?’ ‘How epic can we make it?’ ‘Is this the culmination of all the demons coming to face them?” he said.
“I felt strongly that the biggest, most emotional story we could tell was the most personal story.”
Although The Nun II included a mid-credits scene with Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, The Conjuring: Last Rites doesn’t directly continue that storyline.
The Nun II was mostly set in the 1960s and focused on the possession of Father Maurice (played by Jonas Bloquet).
Meanwhile, based on Entertainment Weekly, The Conjuring: Last Rites is set in 1986—five years after the events of The Devil Made Me Do It. Though the Warrens have stepped into retirement, a chilling new case draws them back into one final nightmare.
Director Michael Chaves revealed that he actually reused a deleted scene from The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It for that teaser, showing Ed and Lorraine receiving a call from Father Gordon (Steve Coulter) about their next case.
It was revealed to be the Smurl Family Haunting, a series of alleged paranormal events that took place between 1974 and 1989 in West Pittston, Pennsylvania.
The Smurl family claimed they were tormented by a powerful demonic presence that caused foul smells, loud noises, physical attacks, and even sexual assaults.
This marks the final chapter for the Warrens in The Conjuring universe after a 12-year saga. But fear not—or fear more—while this ends phase one, the franchise is far from finished.
The Conjuring universe currently consists of eight films: The Conjuring, Annabelle, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, Annabelle Comes Home, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and The Nun 2.
The Conjuring: Last Rites is the ninth installment, concluding “Phase One” and paving the way for what’s to come in “Phase Two.”
It will premiere in theaters on September 5, 2025.
