’Sesame Street’ to stream on Netflix with new season

by Joanna Deala

BEFORE Ms. Rachel, “CoComelon,” and “Bluey,” millennials and Gen Z grew up learning from the characters of the beloved educational children’s television series “Sesame Street.”

And today, the show, which first aired in 1969, is set to make a comeback on the viewers’ small screen through streaming giant Netflix “later this year.”

The streaming service announced that it scored a deal with Sesame Workshop, the production company behind “Sesame Street,” making the series’ new and old episodes available to its audiences worldwide.

“For more than a half a century, Sesame Street has been a beloved cornerstone of children’s media, enchanting young minds and nurturing a love of learning,” Netflix said in a press release.

“Now Elmo, Cookie Monster, Abby Cadabby, and all their friends are coming to Netflix later this year, with Sesame Street’s all-new, reimagined 56th season — plus 90 hours of previous episodes — available to audiences worldwide,” it continued.

In the new season, viewers could expect “fresh format changes” and the return of fan-favorite segments like “Elmo’s World” and “Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck.”

“Additionally, episodes will now center on one 11-minute story, allowing for even more character-driven humor and heart,” Netflix added.

“Sesame Street” also announced the partnership on its official page on X (formerly Twitter), which allows the series to “continue to help children everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.”

“Sesame Street” is not just about educating kids, such as teaching them the alphabet, colors, shapes, numbers, and different emotions. It also entertains the youth through a series of comedic skits featuring a variety of Muppets living on Sesame Street, including Bert, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Ernie, Grover, and Oscar the Grouch.

American puppeteer Jim Henson helped in developing these Muppet characters for the series.

‘Sesame Street’ still available on PBS

The new episodes of the much-loved series will also be available on PBS stations and PBS KIDS digital platforms for free, despite the executive order signed by US President Donald Trump directing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to cut federal funding for PBS and radio network NPR, which he accused of “biased” reporting.

The CBP, however, stressed that it is not a federal executive agency to abide by the president’s order, noting that Congress “directly authorized and funded CPB to be a private nonprofit corporation wholly independent of the federal government.”

Meanwhile, PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger welcomed the new deal with Sesame Workshop, which allows them to continue serving as a home to the hit children’s show.

“I strongly believe that our educational programming for children is one of the most important aspects of our service to the American people, and Sesame Street has been an integral part of that critical work for more than half a century,” she said in a statement.

“We’re proud to continue our partnership in the pursuit of having a profound impact on the lives of children for years to come,” she added.

Apart from the new episodes, new games will be added to the growing library of “Sesame Street” games on pbskids.org and the PBS KIDS Games app.
