Second season of ‘Squid Game’ to wrap up filming soon

The positively reviewed 2021 South Korean series “Squid Game” is in the final stages of filming for its second season and is set to be released later this year.

“Squid Game’s” season one cast will return to the screen with Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun, Lee Byung-hun as In-ho the frontman of the game, Wi Ha-joon as Hwang Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo as The Salesman.

Streaming platform Netflix confirmed the upcoming season of the “Squid Game” franchise in an interview with its co-chief executive officer and chief content officer Ted Sarandos, after he was asked if there would be a second season of the intense survival drama.

“Absolutely,” Sarandos answered. “The ‘Squid Game’ universe has just begun.”

Filming of the final stage of its second season is ongoing at the Studio Cube in Daejeon, South Chungcheong province in South Korea. 

Studio Cube is a public production infrastructure organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency in 2017 to boost the competitiveness and support the development of the Korean broadcast video content industry.

“Last week, we destroyed the existing set and built a new one at Studio Cube in Daejeon Expo Park and are filming the remaining scenes. The previous episode was filmed here, so it’s a familiar space, and we’re smoothly completing the production process,” said a “Squid Game 2” representative to Korean media outlet Newsen.

Studio Cube features an entire chroma key facility wherein “chroma key,” also known as “Color Separation Overlay” which is a standard video production technique, refers to the process of filming in green backgrounds. It is then digitally replaced with computer-generated images (CGI) during the editing phase, according to visual effects software developer Boris FX.

Moreover, Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who oversees writing and directing, “Squid Game 2” will have six episodes, unlike the first season which had nine.

Filming for “Squid Game 2” began in July 2023 and will end in June 2024, according to Newsen’s report.

The first season of the series aired in September 2021 and became Netflix’s biggest show, ranking No. 1 on the Most Popular TV series under the non-English category, with 265.2 million views in the first 91 days on the streaming platform and 2.2 billion hours viewed up-to-date.
