Pacquiao-Mayweather a rematch in the making this year

MANNY “Pacman” Pacquiao, the boxing champion and Filipino pride, has disclosed that he has accepted a rematch vs his old rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a bout scheduled this 2024.

After nearly nine years of anticipation, the former eight-division world champion teased the much-anticipated second installment of their much-hyped battle. This came when Japanese businessman and mixed martial arts (MMA) promoter Nobuyuki Sakakibara probed the Filipino pride.

Pacquiao addressed the fans during the MMA event RIZIN 45 and discussed a possible rematch between him and Mayweather after being asked by RIZIN’s chief executive.

“Can you please fight Floyd Mayweather next year?” Sakakibara asked Pacquiao in a video shown on RIZIN’s social media channels. The boxing champion replied that he was prepared.

“Thank you so much for inviting me here again. I’m sorry for the last time that we promised that we were going to fight this year, but like Sakakibara-san explained,” said Pacquiao.

The Filipino pride was elaborating why he promised an exhibition match against a Japanese fighter during his 2022 New Year’s Eve visit but it didn’t happen.

“This year I will see you here in Japan again with a big fight against…,”  paused Pacquiao. Sakakibara interrupted the former Philippine senator to add, “Floyd Mayweather.”

“Floyd Mayweather, yeah,” confirmed Pacquiao. “I thought you didn’t want me to say that. But I’m excited for that. Thank you for always supporting RIZIN, and thank you Sakakibara-san.”

Pacquiao and Mayweather battled in what was billed the “Fight of the Century” in May 2015. However, the struggle did not end in favor of the Filipino pride, as he was defeated by unanimous decision.

The match not only attracted a record-breaking crowd, but it also captured the excitement of the sport’s supporters.

There have been no more announcements regarding the rumored battle between Pacquiao and Mayweather. It’s unclear if Mayweather and Pacquiao’s rematch will be an exhibition or a full-fledged professional clash.
