Internet, still top choice for news sources – survey

INTERNET remains to be Filipinos’ primary source of information for political news and current events, a recent survey of political consultancy firm Publicus Asia revealed. 

In the digital age, the internet has emerged as the most popular channel for news consumption. Several elements influence this trend, including accessibility, immediacy, variety, and engagement. 

Survey says

According to the PAHAYAG study conducted from September 15 to 19, 67% of respondents use the internet as their major media, while 66% still watch television to get news. 

Meanwhile, the poll found that 62% of respondents still use social media, particularly Facebook, as their primary source of information.

“No change in top sources of information to political news and current events; Internet, TV, and Facebook regardless of area and demographic. Word-of-mouth is also a key source, particularly among 18-24 year-olds,” the poll said.

However, traditional media consumption continues to decline. Only 28% of respondents preferred print media, while 27% named radio as their primary news source and consumption. 

The top options

GMA-7, the most popular television news station, with a trust rate of 49%, followed by ABS-CBN Online at 42%. TV5/Interaksyon, on the other side, scored 37%.

For print media, the Philippine Daily Inquirer has a 42% trust rate, followed by the Philippine Star at 40%. Manila Bulletin scored 39% and placed third in the rankings.

From the results of the survey, Bombo Radyo has the highest trust rating (32%), followed by DZRH (31%), and DZBB (31%). 

PAHAYAG is an impartial, non-commissioned survey. 

The purposive sampling included 1,500 respondents picked at random from a market research panel of over 200,000. 

While this new landscape has many benefits, it also requires a cautious approach to information consumption. As the media landscape evolves, understanding these relationships becomes increasingly important for both news consumers and providers.
