Here’s what to expect on Android 15

NEW system features for Android users are on the way!

Global Android Product Marketing Senior Director Menaka Shroff introduced the second beta version of Android 15 and its new features emphasising privacy and safety features in a product update article on May 15, 2024.

Android 15 Beta 2 brings new experience and greater usage for their users including theft protection as the top feature along with its convenience function.

The following are some of the features coming with Android 15:

Private Space

Android 15 brings “Private Space” wherein users can create a separate, secure space for sensitive apps with an extra layer of authentication. Google mentioned that it is like a digital safe within the device for the apps users don’t want others to easily access.

For example, health or banking apps can be stored in a private space to secure personal information that can only be seen by the owner. With the help of Operating System (OS) integration, it will isolate the data and notifications from the rest of the phone and enhance protection for sensitive apps through Private Space. A separate lock for Private Space can also be set up and hide the existence of it altogether.

Theft Detection Lock

Snatched? Don’t worry. Android 15 features a theft detection lock that will be released later this year which will help users keep their personal and financial data safe if their device is ever stolen. It uses Google Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect if the device is snatched from the owner’s hand and detects “theft motion,” such as if the thief tries to escape by running, biking, or driving away with it, which will trigger the device to quickly lock down.

Real-time Protection on Potential Fraud Apps

Something Phish-y? Google Play Protect got your back! It will use its on-device AI to spot applications that might be linked to fraud or phishing. The live threat detection will analyze how applications use sensitive permissions and interact with other apps to detect suspicious activity in real time. If Google Play Protect finds something strange, the application will be sent to Google for additional review, and users will be warned or the app might be disabled once confirmed harmful.

RCS Support for Japan Users

For Japan users, Google is currently working with one of Japan’s telecommunication operator KDDI and other partners to enhance the messaging experience in Real Communication Solutions (RCS)—a dispatch company that provides Assistant Language Teachers to public elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as some English cram schools, daycare centers, kindergartens, and businesses via Google Message.

Add Items to Google Wallet from a Photo

Soon to be released in the U.S., users will now be able to create a digital version of most passes that only contain text. By simply taking a photo of everyday passes like tickets from events, cards like library, auto insurance, gym membership, and more, a digital version can be created in the user’s Google Wallet for quick access.

AR Content in Google Maps

Android users will soon be able to access the augmented reality (AR) content in Google Maps directly on their mobile phones, making it easier to learn more about a location in a new immersive way.

Fast Pair

Fast Pair is an Android 15 feature that will make connecting android devices and accessories like speakers and earbuds easier. In addition, Fast Pair can also help track an accessory’s battery life and locate missing devices with the new Find My Device app rolling out globally soon.

The Android 15 Beta 2 is now available on handset, tablet, and foldable devices from brands like Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Nothing, OnePlus, OPPO, Realme, Sharp, Tecno, vivo, and Xiaomi.
