“GRAVY kung mag-gravy”: Excessive gravy consumption at fast-food draws flak

GRAVY gets a particular place in Filipino hearts. It has already become a necessary component of any fast-food chicken dish. I mean, who could blame them since gravy is indeed life? 

When complimentary “unli” gravy became available at fast-food restaurants, Filipinos were sure not to pass up the opportunity to fill their stomachs. As they say, “gravy pa lang, ulam na.” 

However, there has been some debate on social media about whether it was acceptable for people to pump a plate full of gravy while the main course is already drowning in it. 

Recently, a TikTok video with the caption “GRAVY KA NAMAN” trended on the platform. This elicited a lot of responses from netizens, prompting them to voice their thoughts on the matter.

The TikTok creator was seen pumping the gravy dispenser so many times in the video that it appeared to be a soup rather than a complimentary dip for the chicken he ordered from a fast-food restaurant.

The video has received 2.4 million views and approximately 66K likes, representing a significant reach. However, the comments section was swamped with various perspectives. 

Some netizens who commented were fast-food chain employees. They said that the content creator’s actions were inappropriate, considering that it would be difficult for the lobby crew to clear their mess after dining, especially if it were covered in remaining gravy.

The video spread to X [formerly Twitter], where many netizens were just as annoyed by how the man appeared to pour an endless amount of gravy on his plate.

Some supported the TikTok user, claiming that his video was intended to entertain and should not be interpreted negatively or given more context than its primary purpose of being a silly film. 

Some people said that they simply enjoy receiving a lot of gravy but this does not imply that they are unconcerned with the needs of other customers; and making a mess out of their plates. 

Other users said that gravy is their comfort food, and that putting extra gravy on their plate allows them to eat more for a lower cost. Some believed that consumers should order the amount of gravy they know they can finish. 

For them, consuming an amount of gravy close to your needs is fine. However, netizens must be mindful of the amount they consume, especially when it becomes excessive. 

People must also be aware of the consequences of their behavior because the lobby crew is responsible for cleaning after their customers’ leftovers. 

Being neat and mindful of your surroundings while eating out is ideal. If you’re getting that much food and gravy, you should try to consume everything, clean up any mess you make, and organize your utensils properly afterwards.
