“Fridgescaping”: People are now decorating the insides of their fridge

by Gaby Agbulos

TIKTOK has always been known as an app to check out if you want to know about the latest trends; what people are used to, however, are ones about dancing, or makeup.

What’s going viral right now is the “art” of scaping your fridge, aptly known as “fridgescaping.”

What the heck is fridgescaping?

Fridgescaping is a new way of storing food and drinks inside your fridge. It comes from the words “fridge” and “landscaping” combined together.

It can be noted that, in the past, the trend on TikTok was making videos of yourself organizing or restocking your fridge until it’s filled to the brim with food and drinks.

Now, fridgescaping takes this to a whole new level. Instead of just placing your items as you normally would in your fridge, you find ways to decorate the space.

Often, the people who do this follow certain themes such as “Bridgerton” or “The Hobbit,” but really, the sky’s the limit with what you can do with your space.

You can, for example, put your fruits and vegetables into little ceramic containers, or put in flower vases, mini sculptures and figurines, and framed photographs in between your drinks.

You can also adorn your bowls of food and water jugs with ribbons for a more coquette vibe. Hell, you can even put in foliage and fairy lights for a more whimsical touch; with this trend, the sky’s the limit.

The reactions of people online since this trend started have been rather mixed, with some calling it unrealistic and inefficient, and others applauding those who do it for their creativity.

“Cute but it would annoy me after a day,” one TikTok user wrote under a fridgescaping video.

Many also question whether the fridges continue to look this put together even as the contents inside start to diminish as time goes by.

“I honestly don’t get how this works,” one commenter said.

Another person, in defense of the trend, said: “The fun thing about life is, we can do fun things! They can be impractical, or silly, but doing something that brings you even a little joy is priceless. Why not decorate a fridge!”

“Do you not do leftovers or buy for more than one day? Separate garage fridge for the real food? It’s pretty! But I don’t see how it actually works.”

As long as you’re happy

As per TikTok user Tiffany Bishop, whose fridge-related videos get over thousands of views, fridgescaping doesn’t have to be serious or expensive.

In an interview with Elle Decor, she said: “Just think, when you open your fridge, What would make me smile more in here? Yes, we should all smile just [because] there’s food in the fridge. But also what would create that extra dopamine hit when you open the fridge door?”

Another TikTok user who makes the same type of content, Lynzi Judish, tells Elle Decor that since she started participating in the trend, she’s been cooking more, and has been using more and more of the food in her garden.

“I didn’t think that I would be getting health benefits from it, but I am legitimately eating healthier than I ever have in my entire life,” she said.

Perhaps many are put off because a fridge is seen as an object of practicality and not something to decorate; you put your food in it and that’s it, end of story.

The reality, however, is that there are few moments in life when one can find joy, and no one is in the position to tell another what they can and can’t do to be happy.

Sure, you may view this trend as impractical, but your opinions don’t speak for everyone. If what these fridgescapers are doing isn’t hurting anyone, then let them have their fun.

Be mindful of your food

While you’re free to do whatever makes you happy, it’s important to also be mindful of how you’re storing your food.

Allie Chanthorn Reinmann of Life Hacker, for example, points out that decanting some items like milk may expose them to new bacteria, thus making them spoil faster.

They also add that leaving some food in baskets – as often seen in this trend – may cause these items to dry out or absorb too much moisture. It can also be noted that putting lights in your fridge might be a bad idea, as batteries and moisture aren’t exactly a good mix, nor are fabrics and woods when it comes to a rather humid environment.

“You’d essentially have to renew your fridgescape daily or you might eventually discover some interesting growth,” they wrote.

So if you do plan to participate in this trend, be sure to do so in a way that isn’t wasteful to the items in your fridge.
