IT’S time to head back to Singapore’s high society— but this time, from your television screen!
After making waves on the big screen in 2018, Crazy Rich Asian is getting a small-screen treatment, promising more family drama, jaw-dropping fashion, and lavish lifestyles we just can’t look away from.
According to Variety, Max is developing a Crazy Rich Asians series, with Adele Lim—co-writer of the 2018 hit film—on board as showrunner and executive producer. Joining her is Jon M. Chu, who returns to the franchise as an executive producer.
The TV project will still be based on Kevin Kwan’s book series of the same name, which was published in 2013. The story centers around Rachel Chu, a Chinese-American professor who discovers her boyfriend, Nick Young, belongs to one of Asia’s wealthiest families. Thrust into Singapore’s elite society, Rachel faces family pressures, cultural clashes, and fierce scrutiny as she fights for love in a world of unimaginable wealth.
It is still quite vague what the series will entail— will it be based on the sequel “China Rich Girlfriend?” Will it follow the 2018 film which starred Constance Wu as Rachel Chu? Since it is still at its early stages, details are not yet clear.
HBO chief Casey Bloys first hinted at a Crazy Rich Asians series in 2024, sharing that a new project was in the works beyond the original film.
At the time, he didn’t mention the involvement of Jon M. Chu or Adele Lim—the latter’s return to the franchise being particularly noteworthy.
