BTS Yoongi apologizes for driving electric scooter while drunk

LAST April 6th, Tuesday, Min Yoongi of Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS) posted an apology after the police arrested him for drunk driving.

According to USA Today, Yoongi – otherwise known by fans as “Suga,” – was reported by his label, Big Hit Music, to have been riding a scooter for about 500 m. He then tripped while parking the vehicle.

He was then approached by police who were near the scene and failed the breathalyzer test asked of him. Following this, the Seoul Yongsan Police Station fined him, and his scooter license was taken away, as he’d violated the Road Traffic Act for drunk driving.

He then took to Weverse to post an apology, writing that he was sorry to everyone who’d been hurt by his “careless and wrong” behavior.

He wrote that he “thought complacently that it was a short distance, not realizing I was not allowed to ride the electric scooter while intoxicated.”

Big Hit has also apologized, stating that Yoongi will accept any disciplinary measures regarding his actions. It can also be noted that no one was hurt when this occurred, which Yoongi mentioned in his statement.

Aside from the fine and the revocation of his driver’s license, investigations are still being done by the police.

“Both the artist and our agency bow our heads in apology for the fact that he was not able to show an exemplary image during his military service and that he caused an unsavory incident during his period of service,” wrote BIGHIT.

“We will diligently cooperate with the police’s additional investigations in the future, and we will humbly accept the result of their investigations.”

Fan reactions

Since the incident occurred, many fans have taken to the internet to show their support for Yoongi in these trying times. ARMYs, the fans of BTS, have started trending the “ARMYLovesSuga” hashtag on X, also adding “We love you Yoongi,” to “Forever with Suga” in their posts.

Others have also tried to find the humor in the situation by making memes of the artist concerning the incident. Some fans are also questioning why people are making such a big deal out of such a “small issue.”

There are also some questioning why fans are defending Yoongi, given that he admitted to breaking the law.

“Why do y’all treat idols like they’re above the law,” wrote one user.

“Suga is guilty and it’s [okay,] y’all will live.”
