Another Filipino is joining the 2nd season of Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’

STREAMING service Netflix has revealed the new cast members for the upcoming second season of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” and one of them is Filipina actress Lourdes Faberes.

Faberes will give life to General Sung, one of the most trusted generals of the Earth Kingdom.

She will be joined in the kingdom by actors Chin Han who will play the role of Long Feng, Justin Chien as King Kuei, Amanda Zhou as Joo Dee, Crystal Yu as Lady Beifong, Kelemete Misipeka as The Boulder, Hao Xuande as Professor Zei, and Rekha Sharma as Amita.

In an Instagram post, Faberes said she was “so thrilled” to be one of the cast members of “Avatar: The Last Airbender’s” second season, stressing that her heart was “so full” to join a sea of Asian talent.

“This beautiful show explores so many of the things I deeply believe in like courage, friendship, resilience and that sometimes, the greatest adventure is finding somewhere to call home when the rest of the world is on fire,” she wrote.

“In my whole career in the UK and Europe, I’ve almost always been the lone East Asian on the entire film set,” she added. “It’s been such a long time coming.”

Filipino roots

Faberes was born and raised in Manila in 1975 before she moved to the United Kingdom in 1997. She has starred in several films and series since the 2000s, including the American fantasy drama series “The Sandman” where she played the role of Kate Fletcher in the first season.

Faberes is not the only Filipino actor in “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” The show also features 15-year-old Filipino-Canadian Gordon Cormier who plays the role of the protagonist, Aang.

The Sta. Rosa, Laguna-born actor visited the Philippines in February, along with co-actor Dallas James Liu who played the role of Prince Zuko, for a fan meeting.

About ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’

Based on the animated series of the same name, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” follows Aang—a free-spirited airbender—and his friends as they embark on a journey to end the Hundred Year War and bring peace among the four nations: the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads.

The series’ first season was released on Netflix in February 2024.

The show also features Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, among others.

Further details about the second season, including its release date, have yet to be revealed, but Netflix Tudum reported that the upcoming season would feature “more of the Earth Kingdom.”
