BIRTHDAY is perhaps the most important day in a kid’s life. It is a cause for celebration and calls for a party.
So you start looking for the venue, asking for recommendations for the perfect catering, thinking of the theme, and scouring for the best entertainment there is. And then you realize that there is so much more to think about and do than just inviting a few friends and a bunch of family members.
Weeks before your kid’s birthday, you give up and decide that you will just have some spaghetti and chicken delivered at your kid’s school to share with their classmates.
Better luck next year, kiddo.
But for Janna Pablo, she spends all her heart and energy to make sure that kids will always remember their birthday parties and that parents will not be stressed out preparing for them.
‘Events Mastermind’ Janna owns and operates Pabys Creative Events, the leading planning, producing, and consulting company in the Philippines for birthday parties, events, and “all other kinds of celebration.”
She has made the party dreams of celebrities like Toni Gonzaga, Bianca Gonzales, Vic Sotto and Pauline Luna, IT Girls — Georgina Wilson, Solenn Heussaff, and Isabelle Daza — and so many others come to reality.
Before becoming the ‘Events Mastermind’, Janna was first the favorite math teacher of Ateneo de Manila Grade School.
It was like some trick of fate, as Janna admitted that of all the subjects, math was not her strongest suit, having been diagnosed as dyslexic as a kid.
When she was young, Janna leaned more into out-of-school activities like gymnastics, ballet, even basketball, as encouraged by her progressive mother. Janna was then described as the fun, noisy, and colorful kid from Aparri, Cagayan.
While taking up Behavior Science in University of Santo Tomas, she was often mistaken as a Communication Arts student because of her personality, plus her brief stint as an actor in the ABS-CBN teen sitcom Let’s Go. (She played Trish.)
So, when she became a teacher in Ateneo, she specifically requested not to teach Math. But when she was given the Math post, Janna took up to the challenge and became the teacher she never had growing up.
“I wanted to help them understand the kids who have my disability. I wanted to share… I had to tell them that Math isn’t hard because when I was growing up, I thought that Math was hard. Pero ‘yon pala, mind setting lang siya,” Janna said.
After four years in Ateneo, she took a year off and tried working in a corporation just to tick it off her employment list. She worked in the business development side of a fast food giant where she excelled most in hosting and organizing events for the company.
But the experience was not the best.
”It was my worst time but I learned the hell of a lot that made me where I am now and found out the business side of things. So, with whatever I am doing now, the reason why I am also effective is because I had a business background to run a business… It was a necessary evil,” Janna said.
Bidding goodbye forever to the corporate world, Janna returned to the academy, this time at Domuschola International School where she took the activities coordinator position for the next three years.
There, she was in charge of the after class clubs and organized field trips, intramurals, and other school activities.
This was also where Janna learned more about kids and their parents, and, of course, events organizing, which eventually led to the birth of Pabys Creative Events in 2017.
For Janna, the key to a successful event is collaboration with the client and all the suppliers, may they be the venue stylist, event photographers and videographers, host and entertainment, even the catering and sound system.
”An event is a blank canvas for me. I’m the painter who gets the colors (aka the suppliers). My paintings are [with the help of] the suppliers because it will all fall into one beautiful painting at the end of the event,” she said, describing the Pabys signature.
And as much as she spends most of her time planning one event after another, Janna said that she has to have an endless bank of creative ideas, because sometimes the situation calls for creative solutions and impomptu decisions.
Having been in the party industry for seven years already, Janna is proud to say that she remembers each of the parties she organized.
”Every party that I do is memorable. Because I like what I’m doing and every experience is unique also. It’s back to the branding of Pabys creating unique events. So, everything has its own personality and it’s created for you,” Janna said, going back to the core of her business.
Researching and keeping up with the trends is one thing, but exploring is another. Janna loves travelling and it plays a big role to keep her eyes fresh and her creative mind open. Not only does she feels rejuvinated while travelling, she also uses her time wandering to observe.
”I like tweaking, I innovate, I check on trends, I travel. When I travel or when I get out of your usual grind, you see things that aren’t normal to you. So, that’s what you use… sometimes, I’m just walking and then biglang, ‘Uy, ang ganda nito!’ I allow myself to experience things or I am a good observer. Sometimes, I spend to experience,” Janna explained.
And if given an opportunity, Janna would love to organize an annual festival for kids, where they have the chance to be themselves and basically just be kids by having the best time of their lives without the pressure from their parents or family or anybody else.
As the ‘Events Mastermind’, Janna relishes on the magic she sees in the eyes of the kids.
And the Pabys promise? “Leave the stress to me. You will enjoy your own party… I want my clients to also be a guest and to appreciate the party.”
