Expect temperature drop to 10 degrees in Cordillera region this December — Pagasa

by Malou Talosig-Bartolome

Time to pull out that warm thin jacket from the cabinet.

State weather forecaster Pagasa today advised Philippine residents that the temperature will drop this December with the onset of northeast monsoon or hanging amihan season.

The coolest region would still be the mountainous areas in Luzon which are those near Sierra Madre and Carabella mountain ranges such as Benguet, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Apayao, Cagayan, Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino. They will experience mercury drop between 10 to 13 degrees Celsius.

Ilocos and Cagayan Valley regions will also experience lower temperatures between 14 degrees to 22 degrees.

The mountainous areas in Mindanao will also experience cooler weather temperature between 15 degrees to 17 degrees.

Residents of Metro Mania and lowland areas of Central Luzon may no longer need to frequently turn on their air conditioning systems this month as the weather will likely register around 17 to 25 degrees.

Lowland Visayas and lowland Mindanao residents will have slightly higher temperatures, but still within the more comfortable temperature range of 19 to 25 degrees and 20 to 24 degrees respectively.

January 2023 will probably be more cruel to our families and friends suffering from arthritis, but a joy to those who love colder weather. Pagasa said January temperatures average 2 to 3 degrees Celsius lower compared to December temps

Weather today

Two weather systems – easterlies and shearline – are bringing scattered rains to some parts of the country.

For rains in Palawan, Eatern Visayas, Bohol, Cebu, Caraga and Davao region, thank (or blame) easterlies for that.

Cloudy skies and rains in Batanes, Babuyan Islands, northern Quezon and Camarines Norte, thank (or blame) the shearline.

Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Bicol region, will also experience scattered rain showers due to localized thunderstorms

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon may also get its fair share of rains in the morning.

For people in the northern portion of Panay and Negros provinces, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, your morning may, too, have rains.

Mindanao, except for the Caraga region, will have better weather from afternoon until evening.

Samar provinces, Southern Leyte will also likely be rainy from afternoon til evening

Rainfall alert

Around 7:30 am, Pagasa advised residents in some areas in Misamis Occidental, Zamboanga del Norte and Basilan to expect moderate with at times heavy rains.

Flood, landslides warning

Although there is no low-pressure area or typhoon, Pagasa said flooding and rain-induced landslides are still possible especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards.

Public and disaster risk reduction and management officials are advised to check their hazard maps and take all “necessary measures” to protect life and property.

Gale warning

Fishermen, mariners and ferry boats traveling near Batanes, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and  Pangasinan are warned – the waves can go as high as 16.4 feet or equivalent to a two-storey building.

Travelers crossing the Pacific Ocean near Aurora, Isabela, Bicol region, northern Samar are also warned that the Pacific Oceans may have rough seas.

Amihan will continue to affect the seas near Luzon areas for the next two days.
