Eraserheads paves way for 6cyclemind

by Izel Abanilla

THE  OPM band Eraseheads lives on.

It wasn’t only revered for their iconic music, they are also credited for paving the way for the birth of most of the alternative rock bands that followed including 6cyclemind.

The previously concluded mega successful reunion concert of the ‘Heads aptly titled “Huling El Bimbo” last December 22 at the SMDC Festival Concert Grounds in Paranaque City wasn’t only a nostalgia blast for generations since the ‘90s. The concert was filled by an overwhelming 75,000-strong crowd that waited long to see the legendary band rock their nostalgic generational mega hits live one last time.

Equally so, it was also a tribute to the guys for the inspiration and help they gave to budding musicians who wanted to follow in  the footsteps of the country’s “Banda ng Masa.”

Composed of Ely Buendia (lead vocal, lyricist), Raimund Marasigan (drums), Buddy Zabala (bass guitar) and Marcus Adoro (lead guitar), the band never lost their spark and magic since they started their journey together back in their early days at the University of the Philippines campus.

On Facebook, 6cyclemind proudly said that their band is one of the many bands born because of Eraserheads.

The group gave a full history of their music journey spearheaded by the ‘Heads.

Firstly, “Si Buddy Zabala ang nag produce ng kantang ‘Trip’ galing sa Panorama album.”

The album “Panorama” is the band’s second studio album with 16 tracks released under BMG Records Pilipinas back in 2005. The album reached gold status in no time.

They went on to say that “Rayms [Raimund Marasigan] ang kauna-unahang guest artist namin. Mahahanap yung song sa 1st album naming Permission to Shine.”

Furthermore, “Producer si Rayms at Buddy ng album na Good by Sunday.”

Also, not many know that “Si Buddy and nag produce ng cover song naming Alapaap.”

“Salamat sa pagiging inspirasyon namin sa pagbabanda,” said the band.

They ended it with an iconic line from the Eraserheads hit Huling El Bimbo, “Nakakaindak, nakakabaliw, nakakatindig balahibo.”

Dubbed as the “The Beatles” of the Philippines, the Eraserheads is greatly credited for spearheading the second wave of OPM bands in the ‘90s making way for various influential alternative rock bands that made it big since their inception in the decade.

Bands that followed such as Parokya ni Edgar, 6cyclemind, Rivermaya and many others have cited Eraserheads as an inspiration to pursue careers in local music.
