HAVING a fur buddy companion is very common nowadays as it provides us the companionship we need and gives us the most unconditional love we’ll ever receive. When you come to live with them, you’ll also start to notice some mannerisms they do whenever they’re with you.
How often do you see your dog wagging their tails whenever they eagerly sees you after a long day or your cat gently purring whenever they’re curled up on your lap? The bond between a pet and its person will always be unique—creating an unspoken understanding that deepens over time.
But have you ever thought on how well you and your furry companion truly vibe? How do your personalities, habits, and energy levels mesh to form a harmonious connection?
In this article, we’ll explore how pets and their persons can be alike in terms of personalities and mannerisms.
Animals are observant creatures and through bonding and social connections; our pet tends to pick up the personalities of their parents.
Imitating human actions is a method that pets use to build a closer bond with humans. They would frequently use mimicry to connect with humans and feel accepted within our social settings.
When it comes to observing, pets can be very good at it too as they are able to read their owner’s body language, behavior, and attitudes. Through these observations, they might imitate these behaviors to receive attention for their parents.
Aside from body language, behaviors, and attitudes, they too can sense their owner’s emotional states whether its excitement, anxiety, or calmness. For instance, if you happen to feel agitated about something, they might mirror that agitation–picking up on the same tension.
For a year, 20-year-old Louise came to notice on how her white cat happened to obtains some of her personality traits. As she would describe her cat as an introvert just like her.
“First of all, my cat does not like to associate with people unless she needs something. That’s true because in a certain instance, pag hindi siya gutom; she would find a place kung saan di siya maiistorbo—na hindi mo siya maabot (sa ilalim ng kwarto), or somewhere na hidden siya like sa cabinet namin.” She said.
Associated with her introverted, her cat also happens to be shy, especially when it comes to new environments.
“Another pa is mahiyain siya pagbago yung environment. Let’s say, first time niyang mag Batangas trip; first time niyang lumabas ng bahay. So ang nanyari for the whole trip, nagpunta kami sa church then lumabas siya sa chruch and nanyari is nanginging lang siya.”
Staying at Batangas, Louise also shared on how her cat is so shy that she would just hide under the queen-sized bed whenever there’s people in the lounge area.
“Nung nandoon na kami sa village; doon sa may lounge–ang ginawa lang niya the whole day is pumasok siya sa loob ng kama then doon siya nagtago. Pero pag wala ng tao sa loob ng room, gagawin niya, iikot siya doon, eexplore niya.”
From what Louise shared, she came to notice how her cat developed traits from her, such as being shy, timid, and needy whenever they need something.
Louise adopted her cat when her cat is just a month old, and from ther,e most of the time, she was the one who was there as her cat grew up. Louise also shares on how she is the one who would always assist her whenever her cat is doing her business on the cat litter.
“I think there’s this study where naadopt nila (lalo na pagbaby cat pa lang), naadopt nila yung ugali nung nagpapapalaki sa kanila.”
For 18-year-old Irish, she also noticed how her pet cat and dog came to adopt some of her personality and mannerisms, and just like Louise, she was also hands-on when it came to her furbabies.
Irish dog is already 5 years old while her cat is still a kitten.
When asked about what kind of mannerisms and personalities her pets have adopted from her, Irish shared that her dog caught her clinginess while her cat isn’t.
“Feeling ko, yung similarities namin ng dog ko is clingy kami pareho.” She shared. “Labrador yung dog ko. Malaki siya pero hindi siya type na kinakatakunan ng mga bata, friendly siya ganoon.”
Despite her dog’s clinginess, one specific trait that her dog got from her is that despite being friendly to everyone, he is still somewhat reserved and not fully open to everyone. “Kung mapapansin mo, saakin lang siya sweet kasi sa ibang bata, ayaw niyang magpahawak. So similar to me, there are certain people lang na I trust in terms of affection.”
In terms of being reserved, this is something that her cat had gotten from her. “Doon naman sa cat ko, ayaw niya yung ikaw lalapit, gusto niya siya. Gusto niya siya yung sasalubong sa iyo; doon lang siya magaask ng attention.”
When asked on what pet is she’s more similar to her, she answered that her dog. “There’s time talaga na mas more leaned ako sa dog ko.”
