Dolly De Leon falls short in Golden Globes, still makes history

by Joyce Remo

INTERNATIONALLY-ACCLAIMED Filipina actress Dolly De Leon failed to secure the best supporting actress award against the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actress Angela Bassett at the 80th Golden Globes Award.

De Leon was nominated for her career-turning break in Triangle of Sadness.

The veteran television, film, and theater actress still made history for being the first Filipino to land a supporting actress nomination in the Golden Globes.

In an eartlier interview, De Leon asked the public to not expect a win as being nominated is already enough.

“Pwede bang huwag na kayong mag-expect,” De Leon laughed. “Tama na ‘yung ma-nominate! But whatever happens, I hope we will continue to do our best in everything that we do.”

De Leon played the character of Abigail in Triangle of Sadness, an overseas Filipino worker who works as a “toilet manager” in a luxury yacht.

Awards and nominations

Although she was unable to bring home a Golden Globes trophy, De Leon bagged an award for the same acting category from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association on December 11.

Aside from this, the Filipina actress was also longlisted for Best Supporting Actress, along with 10 other international actresses, at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Film Awards 2023.

This list will be subject to another voting round on January 19 to narrow the nominees down to six. The awarding ceremony will be on February 19.

De Leon will be up against Jamie Lee Curtis from Everything Everywhere All At Once, Carey Mulligan from She Said, and Angela Bassett from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, to name a few.

Praise for De Leon

De Leon’s more than 30 years of experience in the theater and film industry honed her skill and allowed her to deliver the best acting performances in her projects.

Her power and talent have caught the attention of many critics, and De Leon made it to Variety’s top three contenders for the best-supporting actress award at the Oscars.

In an article titled There Will Be a ‘Triangle of Sadness’ If Awards Aren’t Given to Ruben Östlund and Dolly De Leon, the American magazine wrote that the actress’ “small stature” did not hold her back from “becoming the acting giant of the sprawling tale.”

“If enough Academy members make a note to focus on quality (and not simply name recognition as they can often do), she could be the frontrunner walking into awards season,” Variety added.

In another article, digital magazine Entertainment Weekly said De Leon’s portrayal of Abigail in the satirical film was groundbreaking as she did not only represent the character itself but the Filipino overseas workers as well.

Entertainment Weekly also wrote that portrayals like those of De Leon are important as they “present background characters as foreground.”

The magazine described the Filipina actress’ performance as “the kind of stealth performance that awards-season breakouts are made of.”
