Gallup Korea names BTS top artist of 2022

KPop sensation Bangtan Sonyeondan, commonly known as BTS, is the singer of the year for the fifth time, according to the latest poll of the Gallup Korea Research Institute.

In its survey conducted among individuals whose ages range from 13 to 39, the multi-awarded Korean boy group emerged on top with 29.4 percent of votes.

This is the fifth straight year that BTS dominated the survey of the South Korean research company for the same age range. It first bagged the title in 2018. 

In 2021, BTS members were voted the top idols with 45.6 percent, and in 2020 with 39.2 percent. BTS received 26.3 percent in 2019 and 24.4 percent in 2018.

Other artists and groups who placed in the poll’s Top 10 this year include soloist IU with 26.6 percent, internationally-acclaimed girl group BLACKPINK with 16.6 percent, and rookie girl group IVE with 13 percent.

Ballad and pop singer-entertainer Lim Young-woong and newly debuted girl group NewJeans tied for the fifth and sixth spot, with each garnering 6.5 percent of the votes. South Korean rapper Woo Ji-ho, professionally known as Zico, fourth generation girl group Aespa, girl group (G)I-DLE, and singer-songwriter Lee Mu-jin completed the list with 6.1 percent, 5.7 percent, 4.7 percent, and 4.4 percent of votes. 

Top songs

BTS also ruled Gallup Korea’s Top 10 songs for 2022, with songs Dynamite (8.5 percent) and Butter (6.7 percent) placing first and fourth in the recent survey, despite being released in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Since 2020, BTS has not surrendered its Top 1 spot in the poll, with song Dynamite also securing first place in the same year with votes amounting to 19.6 percent. Butter by BTS led the survey the following year, with 26.6 percent.

Meanwhile, recently released songs LOVE DIVE by IVE and Shut Down by BLACKPINK ranked next to BTS this year with 8.0 percent and 7.2 percent respectively.

These were followed by New thing by Zico with 6.6 percent and Lilac by IU with 6.1 percent of votes. Traffic Light by Lee Mu-jin and Through The Night by IU battled for the sixth and seventh spot with each getting 4.6 percent of votes. IVE’s After LIKE and BLACKPINK’s Pink Venom claimed the last two spots with 4.4 percent and 3.9 percent.

Since 2007, Gallup Korea has been releasing a list of South Korea’s leading singers and songs at the end of each year. 

This year’s poll, which was announced on December 19, was conducted in three periods: July 22 to August 9, September 23 to October 19, and November 7 to 24.

Gallup Korea included 5,302 respondents in the 2022 poll, consisting of 2,511 people aged 13 to 39 and 2,791 people aged at least 40 years old. The respondents were asked to name singers who “shone brightly” in 2022 and results were divided into two categories: the 13 to 39 and at least 40 years old.

Top singers for the 40 and up

The top singers for the other category were Lim Young-woong, Jang Yoon-jeong,Park Young-tak, Song Ga-in, Lee Chan-won, Na Huna, Jin Sung, Jung Dong-won, Jang Minho, and Kim Ho-joong.

The top 10 songs for this age group are the following: 

1. Love Always Run Away by Lim Young-woong

2. Drink Makgeolli by Young-tak and First Marriage by Jang Yoon-jeong and Seo Byung-soon

4. Trust in Me by Lim Young-woong

5. At Andong Station by Jin Sung

6. Jintobaegi by Lee Chan-won and Tess Hyung by Na Hoon-a

8. Our Blues, Our Life by Lim Young-woong

9. Barley Pass by Jin Sung

10. Thank You by Kim Ho-joong
