BTS leader RM talks about pressure

“One who wears the crown, bears the crown.”

BTS leader Kim Nam-joon, commonly known as RM, shared the pressure he felt by being part of one the most influential KPop groups worldwide when he appeared recently in a Korean news show.

KPop boy group Bangtan Sonyeondan, also known as BTS, is one of the biggest and most successful KPop groups worldwide.

Recently, the group’s leader and rapper dropped his most-awaited solo debut album called Indigo, with tracks mirroring the singer-songwriter’s thoughts and feelings.

In an interview with KBS News, RM shared the story behind the album and its tracks.

As confirmed by the singer, the Indigo album tackles the confusion, frustration, and emptiness he felt during the years he spent in the music industry.

“When you perform at a big stage, you experience the cheers [of] 50,000 to 60,000 people, but when you come back to [the] hotel, your ears are muffled. And sometimes you have ringing in the ears, too,” RM said. “And you feel like suddenly everything has drained away like the ebb at once.”

RM also said that he might appear in front of the camera as BTS’ leader, but at the end of the day, he’s only human.

“Sometimes I appear on the news and do the interview like today. This is such an honor to be here. But then, when I am back home, I am just an ordinary person who likes books and paintings,” he added.

When asked if he felt frustrated and empty during his career as a KPop idol, RM said he felt like he was wearing a crown from being part of BTS. And this crown bears a substantial weight.

“It is a well-known cliche that one who wears the crown bears the crown. But many people can imagine how heavy the crown is for BTS,” he told KBS News.

Despite being heavy, RM said this crown is also a blessing and he feels lucky to be loved by many.

“It is very heavy but it is also, how can I put it, it is a blessing. It is priceless and a blessing and I think I am so lucky to be loved, thanks to the blessings from so many people,” he said.

This blessing is what reminds RM to gladly “accept his destiny rather than feeling uncomfortable about this heavy crown.”

BTS debuted in 2013 under BigHit Entertainment with the song No More Dream. BTS is composed of seven members, with stage names Jung Kook, V, Jin, Jimin, SUGA, RM, and j-hope.

The internationally-acclaimed boy group has won various awards, including the Billboard Music Award for Top Social Artist from 2017 to present and the American Music Award Artist for Artist of the Year in 2021.

BTS members are planning to complete their mandatory military service. The group’s oldest member, Jin, enlisted on December 13.

The group is currently on hiatus and are set to return to the limelight in 2025 once all seven members have fulfilled their military duties.
