Barbie’s no longer just this perfect woman

by Gaby Agbulos

WITH her blond hair, blue eyes, and well-proportioned body, a Barbie doll was what many used to consider as the perfect woman.

But over the years, many young girls around the world realized that Barbie’s looks did not really reflect reality or represent them.

Since then, Barbie has evolved. Its maker, Mattel, came out with a Frida Kahlo Barbie doll in 2018, keeping alive the memory of the talented artist.

And then it decided to honor the memory of activist Rosa Parks by creating a doll of her in 2019. Barbie also aired an episode on YouTube that tackled racism to help children better understand the concept and why it’s harmful to society.

As the years passed, Barbie has grown to become more and more progressive. To a lot of people, she now represents more than just a doll. Seeking to spread a message of equality and positivity using its brand line, Barbie represents thousands of children eager to say, “I can do it too.”

That’s why it’s no surprise, then, that so many people are prepping for National Barbie Day, which is celebrated each year on March 9. And with Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film Barbie scheduled to come out this year, many are hard put to quell their excitement for the day.

National Barbie Day

Barbie was founded in 1959 and has been celebrating her official birthday (National Barbie Day) on March 9 ever since. The brand was created by Ruth Handler, the wife of Elliot Handler, the co-founder of the toy company Mattel, Inc.

There are a lot of things that can be done during National Barbie Day. If you have Barbies, you can play with them, or share them with your kids or siblings. You can buy a Barbie for someone that you know would love them. Hell, you can even dress up as the iconic figure! Just don’t forget to use the hashtag #NationalBarbieDay when celebrating.

If you don’t have a Barbie to play with, you can also celebrate this day by buying a cake or a cupcake. Or if you do have a Barbie you’re not using it anymore, it’s encouraged to give them away to the people who may need or want them more.

All about Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ (2023)

Many speculate that director Greta Gerwig plans to release another trailer of her Barbie movie on Barbie’s birthday, which many are excited about since the last release was a teaser trailer back in December of 2022.

The trailer was a quirky, innovative take on Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, except all the monkeys had been replaced by young girls instead. The trailer also showed several talents expected to star alongside Margot Robbie (Barbie) and Ryan Gosling (Ken,) such as Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, and Issa Rae.

There are also many other artists that are said to be a part of the 100 million-dollar film, including Alexandra Shipp, America Ferreira, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, and even Will Ferrell. An iconic cast for what many hope will be an iconic film.

The story so far

Vogue said the film would focus on Barbie getting kicked out of Barbieland because of her flaws, which forces her to go out into the real world. In her new adventure, she finds that perfection is found within, and is not defined by what others may think or say of her.

With Gerwig gaining numerous awards for her female-centered films like Lady Bird (2017) and Little Women (2019) in the past, many have high expectations from the feminist director.

Why this matters

The idea behind Barbie has changed so much since she was first created. From being seen as just an airhead that only ever thought about shopping or boys, Barbie has turned into a way for children to express themselves and to dream about their futures.

Now, Barbie encourages its audience with dolls who are doctors, presidents, and astronauts, urging them to quite literally reach for the stars.

The forthcoming release of the Barbie movie, with its inspiring message thus far, further shows that Barbie is leaving behind the whole idea of beauty and perfection.

Instead, she is teaching the audience that nobody is perfect–and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Gerwig’s film is scheduled for release on July 21, 2023. Many will definitely be seated for this one.
