59 writers, poets, playwrights get Palanca awards

by Leila Salaverria

THE Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature is back after two years, and this year it honored  59 of the country’s best writers, poets, and playwrights in a traditional ceremony Wednesday.

The 70th edition of the prestigious event, held in Bonifacio Global City, handed out awards in 22 categories. Of the 59 writers recognized, 28 are first-time awardees. It was the first ceremony since a two-year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic that struck the county in March 2020.

An elite roster of literary luminaries handpicked for their respective expertise evaluated the entries, according to the Carlos Palanca Foundation, Inc.

Dr. Nicanor Tiongson, known for shaping young minds in film, media, literature, and theater, was this year’s guest of honor.

Tiongson is a professor emeritus of the University of the Philippines Film Institute and former Dean of the UP Diliman College of Mass Communication. He is a founding member and former chair of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino and has published studies on Philippine film and theater.

The Palanca Awards is named after businessman and philanthropist Don Carlos Palanca Sr. and seeks to develop Philippine literature by providing incentives for writers, by being a treasury of the Philippine’s literary gems, and by helping disseminate their work to the people, especially to the students.
