by Joyce Remo

THE world has undeniably fallen for the irresistible charms of the Filipino cuisine and Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list is the living proof.

Two home-grown restaurants in Makati, Toyo Eatery and Metiz, made it to the prestigious list sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna. The highly-anticipated catalog was revealed on Tuesday, March 28 in Singapore.

Metiz ranked 48th in the list while Toyo Eatery made a comeback by occupying the 42nd place after it failed to secure its spot from last year’s list following its three-peat from 2019 to 2021.

The 10th edition of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants also included an assortment of well-loved diners from 9 different cities in 11 countries and seven new entries.

Metiz

Located in Chino Roces Avenue in Makati, Metiz Restaurant first opened its doors in 2018 by chef Stephan Duhesme. Known for its ingenious experimentations on the combination of Filipino, western, and northern cuisines, it has become one of the classic restaurants in the metro that offers fresh, delicate, and exquisite meals.

According to 50 Best, Metiz’s eight-course dish is popular among its patrons as it “boasts dishes such as aged tanigue (mackerel) with fermented rice and mushroom.”

Toyo Eatery

This award-winning diner has gained praises from food critics even during its early years. Established in 2016 by chef Jordy Navarra, who previously trained at the Fat Duck in the United Kingdom and Bo Innovation in Hong Kong, Toyo Eatery gained immense popularity for its garden vegetable cuisine called Bahay Kubo.

This dish consists of literally every single vegetable mentioned in the children’s song.

Aside from this, Navarra’s playful and inventive take on classic Pinoy dishes has also helped the restaurant in making its name known in the international scene.
